Global Migrants and the Roles of the Privileged

"You are lost if you forget that land belongs to no one, and its fruit belong to everyone.”
- Jean-Jacques Rousseau

It was a nice, hot summer day in July when I visited New York City. It was a busy, fast-faced place where people walked non-stop. The people was very diverse that it is quite hard to pinpoint what race dominates in this city that never sleeps. It is, indeed, a beautiful mess.

If a New York City were a painting, it is a kaleidoscope in relation to Global Migration. However, it is obvious these who are vastly different from one another are united in this one place. It can also be a picture of unequal distribution of resources. You can see rich executives and at the same time see those bearing signs around their necks that say, “Help! I’m homeless. Even your spare change can help.” This kind of reality in NYC is what scarred me the most.

We went to the Big Apple to visit the United Nations headquarters. We discussed Global Migration other issues. Global Migration is a pressing issue today. This is because of ongoing wars and poverty that is experienced in many parts of the world. People from countries who experienced violence, oppression, and vulnerability try to go to another place to seek refuge.

Migration means going from one place to another. Not only do human beings migrate, but animals and plants as well. It is in the very nature of living species to go to a place where they will thrive. It is in our instinct to fight for survival.

A lot of countries who receive migrants are not welcoming, especially to people who are oppressed and who are in need the most. The reason why is security and the feeling of entitlement that a certain country belongs to citizens alone.

There are reasons why people won’t let just refugees in, but what can be the reason why they should be let in?

The Land Belongs to Everyone

Is the notion of private property real? Does it really belong to certain people alone? A property is. Indeed, not a private property but a social property. A lot of people influenced a certain property, why does it only belong to a certain being?

No property is really owned but it is a social entity. This concept of private property is what oppresses other people. A lot of people are deprived of needs and it is the bigger percent of the whole population of earth. Will you let greed take over you? Nobody owns anything, the earth only belongs to God.

Christian Approach to Migrants

“And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field up to its edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am Lord your God.” – Leviticus 23:22

Methodism is made to focus on the poor and the oppressed. So as Christians, Methodists, it is our mission to live for the poor. It is our mission to provide for their needs.

The Privileged
If you read the works of Marx and Hegel, they were against the bourgeois or the so-called oppressors. Their concept is humanistic because they are for equality. But for the privileged, their cynical view of them is not right.

A lot of privileged people just do not know the dark situations of oppression and oppressor. It is a possibility that they just do not know what is wrong with the people and the poverty crisis that is happening.

I am not a cynical person and I believe that a lot of people have a kind nature, too. As privileged people, they must know the situation more. They should be an instrument of equality instead and know how to discourage oppression.

As privileged ones, you are in a great position to stop oppression and to let people in because they need help. We must help ease the global migration problem by assisting the refugees who are seeking a better, safer place to live in. We must stop prejudice against them just because of their race, religion, and nationality.

Every human being is made to be an instrument of God in His ways.
