A New Journey
As
the days were passing by, I noticed that the week was almost ending, and I
guess it was all due to the routine I had every day from the minute I would wake
up until I would go to bed. I managed to have a set schedule to ensure I would
arrive to workplace on time. Every other day I would set a goal for myself in
order to challenge myself and be committed to this internship. I will admit
that some of the goals I put myself through were not easy at first but I somehow
achieved them. Like for instance, one of my main goals was to submit my work
from my field placement on time and in an orderly fashion. Thanks to the
support I got from my supervisor, she helped me break down my workload into different
components in order to set my priorities first and then work on other less important
tasks later.
Every
time I stepped inside the office, I would always tell myself that I could get
the job done. No matter how much I self-doubted myself or had lack of self-confidence,
I always made sure a part of me was mentally stable to achieve the goals I set
myself for in order to ensure I meet the expectation needed to get the outcomes
in the workforce to end poverty. As I started to set these goals, my supervisor
made me remind myself that sometimes these goals have to be timely, realistic, achievable,
measurable, and specific. Everyday I still work towards these goals and I can definitely
say that you can do anything you set your mind to as long as you put the work
into it.
During
this week, I also got to meet a great person who is part of the United Methodist
church named Rev. Neal. It is always great to know people outside of my
background or ethnicity to learn from other people’s culture and food. In
addition, getting to meet other people is also practice for me to better my
interpersonal skills and have the opportunity individualize every person based
on who they are and the experiences they obtained through life. We happened to
have dinner at Union Market which had a variety of different food from Indian
food to Italian food and even Korean food. The smell and the atmosphere of the
food court made it feel like a learning experience because Rev. Neal was
introducing me to a variety of food they had, and I can honestly say it is
worth going. Their Italian food is very tasty and delicious. I also had the
chance to try lamb for the first time and it has an awesome taste. It was
interesting getting to know Rev. Neal and I appreciate him taking the time to
get to know each of the EYA Interns. This experience has shown me that
sometimes getting to know different people makes me realize how connected we
all are despite our differences.
Making goals that are strategic and measurable is a very useful skill that you will be able to use in every future work setting. It will take time to know your capacity and the amount of time a task takes so be patient with yourself. It sounds like you are taking full advantage of connecting and learning from the people God is placed in your world this summer.
