Blog 4: Visits
I didn't mention it in last weeks blog since it started to feel a little long, but my dad was able to visit me here in DC. It was really nice getting to spend an evening with him out here. He knows so many people here so it was interesting getting to talk to him about meeting people he's known for a long time. This week, my girlfriend, came out to see me. She got to meet the other EYA interns and see some of DC. She was only able to stay for a few days, but I'm happy I was able to see her. I think these visits made me feel a little homesick. It was great to see them but after they left, I felt like I wanted to go with them. But I also know that once we leave DC, all the other EYA interns are going to be far apart and I'm not looking forward to that. I'm excited to be going to Tennessee soon for my placement, but I'm also pretty disappointed that I'll be away from the other EYAs for a week and that the program is almost over.
Speaking of visits, I had the opportunity to visit one of the CDF's Freedom Schools this week. Freedom Schools are six week programs for students that take place during the summer with a focus on reading. Freedom Schools aim to help students maintain their reading skills over the summer and foster a love for learning within them. This experience was exciting for me because I was able to see one of the CDF's programs in person. While everything that we do in the office is important, it gave me a new understanding of the work that the CDF does now that I was able to visit and see it for myself. This experience was also helpful because I had originally wanted to be a teacher before I knew much about non-profits and NGOs. I was only at the school one day and I was volunteering but I don't think I have the skillset needed to be a teacher. I think what I plan to do is what I'm supposed to be doing, even if it can be more monotonous than teaching. I'm grateful for the experiences I've had while I've been in DC because the've been helping form a better picture of what I want my future to hold.
