Blog 5: We are Children
Blog 5: We are Children
July 4th most of us interns went out to the
steps of the Supreme Court to try and watch the fireworks. It was a fail as the
location of where they light them was moved this year, but somehow someone (I
won’t mention who *cough Jaylon cough*) started a game of tag. It was a fun energy boost and after ten minutes
we were back in the apartments hanging out again. Fast forward eleven days and we’re still
playing. We took the game to New York, running
through streets, stores, times square, and even our hostel giggling and trying
so very hard not to be tagged ‘it’. We’ve
even roped in the adults in charge of our program.
I bring this up because we’ve captured a joy that I
feel like people our age only hear about.
I've heard many people say that their favorite part of having kids is
watching someone discover the world and this week I feel like that is what we experienced
together as interns. We have long days
and we work in offices where advocacy is the name of the game which can be long,
hard work. The outlet of running around like
five year-olds, getting scolded by security guards, even playing in our business clothes
is so refreshing.
DC is so serious can you imagine how much less
stressed everyone would be if they had tag in their lives? I can see congress members running around
laughing, ducking, swerving around the parking lot guards, desperate to make it
to the next building without being it for the whole hearing. It’s hot and humid, we’re all going to work
up a sweat anyway, why not have fun doing it?
Obviously, my suggestion isn’t in line with the decorum of the positions
they hold and it probably won’t happen, but our two week game (which is very
much on-going) has relieved so much tension and seriousness that this city
carries. Try it. Play some tag when you’re stressed, it’ll
help.

I love this. We have to be intentional about seeking this childlike joy. I'm thankful for the reminder. And I think a congressional game of tag could work wonders for capitol hill.
