This week at the GBCS has been an educational one. As the summer goes by I have had the chance to talk to the different staff members of Church and Society. When I had the opportunity to talk to Rev. Susan, the general secretary, I had an almost lightbulb moment. As a Christan and a child of God, I care for all of creation. When creating the world that we live in God called all that was seen good and God gave us creation to shepherd and maintain. When we look into the Gospel the greatest command that Jesus Christ gives us is to love God with all our soul, mind, and strength and to love our neighbor as ourself. Therefore, no matter the color of someone’s skin, their ethnicity, financial status, health, or if they have convicted a crime they are children of God and deserve mercy and love.
As someone who lives in the USA I have never been into politics. Now I do understand that to be a Christian is political. To say that Jesus Christ is Lord is to say that Caesar is not nor any other governing body. Therefore I know that what I say and what I believe can seem political/liberal to others while to me it is my faith. But the world I live in is made of a system that is very political. The government passes laws that affect REAL people and the world. This means that even if I am not a “political” person I should care about the policies and laws that can negatively change the lives of others.
This does not mean that I have to consume my life with politics. But it does mean I should be aware. Take on one issue at a time instead of overwhelming myself with every issue at once. But to be a follower of Christ is political. I hope that during this summer I can continue to learn from my placement and the people I am working with. I pray that God will open my eyes to how to better serve people well and care for them well. I am grateful for my experience that I get to have this summer. It is a privilege to work with not only the GBCS staff but the interns as well.
Thanks, Emma. It is so important for us grapple with what it means for "God to be Lord". This changes so much, it mandates that care for our neighbors in all the systems that govern our world. Consider what political issue you want to look at deeper.
